Diavolicchio Calabrese is the Italian chilli pepper par excellence. It is the most widespread variety in Italy due to the abundant productivity of its plant and its spicy, strong flavour, which makes it versatile and widely used, especially in Mediterranean cooking.

Description

Organic Diavolicchio Calabrese Pepper

The organic hot pepper Diavolicchio Calabrese is a variety of Capsicum annuum. Native to Calabria, it is among the most intense and popular species in Italy. There are several variants, each with a different degree of hotness, but generally the Diavolicchio Calabrese ranks medium on the Scoville scale, with a score of 40,000 SHU. Its plant is very fruitful: it produces many small fruits – oval-shaped and 3-5 cm long – which grow in beautiful bunches.

How can I grow it?

The organic Diavolicchio Calabrese is a very productive cultivar, which is why it is well suited for growing in soil when temperatures are stable above 15°. However, it will also do well in a pot indoors as long as it receives the right amount of sunlight and water.
Start by germinating the seeds: place them well apart in a container on moistened paper towels and wait for the sprouts to emerge; the Diavolicchio Calabrese has a harder tegument than other chillies, so this phase may take a little longer. Then gently move the sprouts into well-drained soil and water them sparingly and often, taking care not to create water stagnation.
After about three months, your organic chillies will turn bright red, at which point you can harvest them and consume them in many different ways.

How can I eat it?

With its unmistakable aroma and immediate spiciness, the organic Diavolicchio Calabrese chilli pepper is also perfect for direct consumption: use it to flavour your first and second courses, or in oil.

We recommend wearing gloves when handling the chillies to avoid skin irritation.
Store the seeds in a cool, ventilated place, at a temperature between 8° and 20° C, away from atmospheric agents, changes in humidity and sunlight.
